Decentralized Waste Water Treatment System in Agra

A DEWAT has been built on the Kuchpura drain under the Slum Upgrading project to improve waste water drainage in the area and reduce health risk. The DEWAT uses natural treatment techniques and bio-medication in different combinations. It has a filter chamber to filter debris, a septic tank for primary treatment, a baffle filter reactor for secondary treatment, a reed bed system for the tertiary process and an underground sump for storage and safe disposal into river downstream. It is treating 50kl of grey water, making it available for reuse in urban agriculture and has had significant improvement in quality of life.
